Murder: To Kill or Not to Kill is a funny point and click game where your goal is to kill the king. There are various ways to do so, but the most direct one is to smash the king's head with a giant wooden hammer while he is not looking. Try to lift the heavy hammer while the king's attention is elsewhere and drop it down when he looks or he might call the guards on you. Will you be lucky enough to land a killing blow? In order to murder a Student, the protagonist needs a weapon. With a weapon equipped, she can attack any nearby students. Once the attack button is pressed, the protagonist will start a murder animation. Its duration depends on the sanity level: the lower sanity is, the longer animation will be. Once the animation is complete, the following will happen:


To avoid being arrested, the protagonist only has to dispose of the evidence pointing to her as the murderer. While doing it, she still needs to avoid being witnessed carrying a corpse or dismembered body parts, as any of this will lead to the same consequences as being witnessed committing a murder, or being witnessed carrying a weapon, being bloody or insane, which is considered suspicious behavior and may have several consequences depending on who was the witness. Player can use Yandere Vision to highlight all potential evidence and other characters nearby.

Besides that, the protagonist needs to retain high sanity so that she will not be taken into custody. She also needs to be careful, as if four or more students witnessed murder, they will report it to the police and they will arrest her even if she disposed of other evidence.


The protagonist is able to wear gloves by joining the drama club in order to keep the weapon clean of her fingerprints so it cannot be traced back to her. It can be used to frame another student, which will lead to them being arrested and the school atmosphere restored, as everyone will think that the killer was arrested.


The protagonist cannot kill teachers unless she has invested 40 study points in Physical Education,[1] has invested 20 points and played a fighting game in the Gaming Club on the day she attacks the teacher, or has joined the Martial Arts Club. If the protagonist attempts to attack a teacher without the necessary strength, or with any weapon that is not a short stabbing weapon, she will be immediately apprehended. If the protagonist has the necessary strength, and is holding a short stabbing weapon, she can attack a teacher. This will initiate a struggle minigame. If the teacher wins, the protagonist will be pinned down and receive a game over. If the protagonist wins, she will plunge the weapon into the teacher's stomach.


The protagonist can kill Student Council only from behind, as they will immediately pepper spray her. Although it is possible to sneak from behind, they will hear her footsteps sound and turn to her; she will need to sneak or crawl to avoid making any sound, however, this is considered to be suspicious behavior. She can distract them by dropping a weapon on the ground and sneak from behind while they're investigating it. When they finish investigating, which they will do for a few seconds, they will either take the weapon and bring it to where it belongs or tell the teacher about it.


If the protagonist attempts to attack a delinquent, a QTE mini game will start. Player will have to quicky press the button displayed on the screen; if they fail to do it, the delinquent will hit the protagonist, and vice versa. After three hits, the game will over; if the delinquent lose, they will drop the weapon and the protagonist will be able to kill them, and if the protagonist lose, she will not be able to fight the delinquents this day; she can rest in the Infirmary, however, it will lead to her skipping class and reputation penalty.


If Ayano tries to attack Raibaru Fumetsu, she will be apprehended by her immediately, as she's one of the strongest students in the school. In order to kill her, she will need to either poison her or order a mind slave to kill her and attack her from behind.


NPCs will scream when attacked. A stealth kill will cause a much more quiet (but still audible) noise. Any NPC who hears the scream (which can be heard further away as school atmosphere drops) will turn around and scream themself, or will go to investigate what happened. After a student witnesses two murders, they will flee immediately.[2]


If a witness with the Spiteful, Fragile, or Coward persona is left alive, they won't damage the protagonist's reputation, but won't let the protagonist interact with them. However, if she kills someone the Spiteful student likes, they will run away and call the police, damaging her reputation as normal.


If the protagonist commits murder with more than 4 witnesses present, they will run towards her and force her to the ground from all sides. the protagonist cannot fight back against this. However, if all witnesses are cowards, the protagonist will not be apprehended.


Upon witnessing a murder, or finding a corpse, Loners will dash for the entrance of the school grounds. If the main gate is open, they will flee that way. If it is closed, they will flee using the side gate. They will then attempt to reach the steps that separate Akademi from the rest of the town. Once they reach the steps, the protagonist cannot catch them. They will run to their home, and inform the police. This will start the police timer. (A 5-minute countdown for the protagonist to clean up evidence before police arrive at Akademi.


If a student with the Teacher's Pet persona witnesses a murder or sees a corpse, they will run to their class teacher and inform them of the event. The teacher will demand to be shown the corpse. (See strict persona) After warning their teacher, they will stay near them in shock or if another Teacher's Pet is already running to the faculty room, they will run to their classroom and hide. If a Teacher's Pet finds that all teachers are dead, they will react as a loner. If the corpse has been removed, the teacher will scold the student for pranking her. The Teacher's Pet will be distressed, and will hold their arm with their head hanging low. If they find a second corpse, they will react as a loner.


Currently, only teachers have this persona. If a Strict teacher finds a corpse, or is led to one, they will call the police and guard the corpse. If they discover that the protagonist is the murderer, they will run towards her in an attempt to apprehend her. If the protagonist does not have a short stabbing weapon equipped, or has under level 2 in Physical Education, she instantly be apprehended. Otherwise, a struggle minigame will begin. If the teacher wins, she will pin the protagonist to the ground. If the protagonist wins, she will stab the weapon into the teacher's stomach, killing her. If the protagonist is in the Martial Arts Club, she will instantly win and kill the teacher.


If a student with the Heroic persona witnesses a murder that is not a murder-suicide, they will try to apprehend the protagonist by chasing after her. If they catch up and grab her while she has a short stabbing weapon, this will cause them to enter a Struggle minigame, where the player has to press several buttons rapidly in order to fight back and kill them. If she fails to get out of their grasp, they will pin her to the ground and a Game Over will appear. If the protagonist wins, she will knee the student in the stomach and then stab them in the head. If the protagonist has no weapon, then she will be pinned down immediately once the student catches her. As of the February 15th, 2016 Build, the player can no longer struggle against an NPC if holding a large weapon that cannot be concealed, such as a katana. If more than one hero witnesses the player murder someone, only one will chase her while the other(s) remain in their shocked animation. If one hero is taken down, then another will run to the protagonist immediately afterward. If the protagonist is in the Martial Arts Club, she will instantly win these fights without any player input. If a student sees the protagonist murder their crush, best friend, or family member, they will switch to the heroic persona, and their strength will reach maximum level.


If a student with the Social Butterfly persona witnesses a murder, they will run to places with the most students such as the plaza. Social Butterflies will then call the police, and will scream if they see the protagonist. This will cause other students to see the protagonist covered in blood with a weapon (leading to a harsh reputation penalty,) but if they witness another murder they will curl up into a ball, scared.


If a student with this persona witnesses a murder, they will beg the protagonist not to kill them and won't report the murder. the protagonist will be kicked out of the Occult Club if she is a member of it and seen by a member of it. She will be banned from joining the club if she is not in it.


The first delinquent who witnesses a murder will run after the protagonist with the weapon they are carrying. Once caught up, a combat minigame will begin. They will continue to fight the protagonist until either she is knocked out or the delinquent she is fighting with is killed. However, if the protagonist murders one of the Bullies (Except when all bullies dead with the exception of Kokoro Momoiro) they will react like a spiteful student.


A murder witness with the Phone Addict persona will snap a picture of the murder evidence and begin sending it via text to the police. If a Phone Addict takes a picture of a bloody the protagonist, she must pursue the witness, murder them, and destroy the phone so not to leave any evidence.
